Frequently Asked Questions

Other Commonly Asked Questions

RELATIONSHIP CLUSTER:

Do you offer couples therapy for relationships in crisis?

Yes, crisis is when couples therapy can play a huge role in de-escalation and re-regulation of surging emotions. The urgency you feel is not a barrier to the work, but a sign of how important it is to get started.

What is discernment counseling?

Discernment counseling is a specific, brief process designed for couples where one or both partners are uncertain whether to continue the relationship. It is not couples therapy — it is a structured way of gaining clarity about the decision itself before committing to a direction. Some couples emerge from discernment counseling choosing to work on the relationship; others find clarity in a different direction. Either outcome is a valid one.

What is EFT?

Emotionally Focused Therapy is one of the most extensively researched and validated approaches in couples and individual therapy, consistently showing strong outcomes in clinical studies. Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, EFT is grounded in attachment theory and the understanding that we are fundamentally wired for secure connection, such that emotional disconnection is at the root of most relational distress. Rather than focusing on conflict management techniques (such as with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), EFT works by identifying the underlying emotional patterns and attachment needs driving the relationship distress cycle — reshaping these at their foundation. The result is not just reduced conflict, but a genuinely deeper felt sense of security and connection.

TRAUMA CLUSTER:

What is complex trauma?

Complex trauma develops from prolonged or repeated experiences of overwhelming situations, particularly when young or in circumstances where self-removal or resistance was simply not available. It can shape how you relate to others, regulate your emotions, and perceive of yourself in your world. Healing is possible, and these feelings can be laid to rest.

Do you work with partners of trauma survivors?

Yes, and people in this situation often feel lost and out of place. Overlooked even. Loving someone carrying deep trauma is its own profound experience; it can be confusing, exhausting, and isolating in ways rarely acknowledged. You deserve support that is specifically yours.

SOME OF THE PEOPLE I WORK WITH:

Do you work with men who are resistant to therapy?

Yes, men have been conditioned to be skeptical of self-reflection. And look where it gets us! The truth is, we all need moments where we take stock of our situation, and even of our emotional state. Whether self-directed or at the instigation of a partner, I understand your hesitancy and the burdens of social messaging. We can craft the space you need.

Do you work with LGBTQ+ persons?

Yes, I am available to all people. I provide an affirming, non-judgemental space for all sexual orientations, gender identities, and relationship structures. Whether you are navigating questions of identity within a relationship, seeking therapy as an individual, or exploring forms of consensual non-monogamy, you will find a genuinely welcoming space here. I have written a blog post about my personal framework for sexuality and gender identity, which you may find of interest.

ADMINISTRATIVE AND PRACTICE ORIENTED:

What type of therapy do you offer?

My primary approach is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), in which I hold ICEEFT Advanced Skills-level training and am continuing toward full certification. EFT is one of the most extensively researched couples therapy approaches available. I also draw on trauma-informed care, systemic therapy, person-centered talk therapy, and narrative therapy — selecting and blending approaches based on what best fits each individual client and situation. I have found that the relationship we develop is the key to achieving the change you seek.

Do you offer virtual therapy sessions?

Yes. I offer secure, HIPAA-compliant virtual sessions for residents anywhere in South Carolina; for those in more rural areas this has proven to be very beneficial, as with couples with young children and people fitting in therapy around their busy lives. Virtual sessions are conducted through a professional practice management platform and are fully confidential and equivalent in quality to in-person work.

Do you offer evening appointments?

Yes. I offer evening appointments weekdays until 7pm, and have found that couples in particular appreciate Thursday or Friday evening sessions, these can create a natural transition into a date night or the weekend with fresh perspective and connection. Saturday and Sunday appointments are also available by arrangement.
